Lavender Sky

Bead jewlery by Steve Capell

Art inspiration can come from a variety of places: nature, people, books, museums, dreams, movies, etc. Recently, we went to see the film Avatar® and we were drawn in by the story and the characters, I was fascinated by the science and we both were completely fascinated by the artistic talent that is exhibited throughout this epic film. Artists often view museums, nature, people, and movies sometimes differently than others might view the same media.

This is the case with this film. I came away from the film with lots of ideas; however, the idea that kept coming back to me was the jewelry that Jake wore in the movie. I immediately wanted to look for cords and twine that could be used to make similar choker type jewelry. The inspirational piece of jewelry that came about because of this endeavor is called “Lavender Sky.” This necklace is a one of kind hand made piece; however, we have elected not to sale this item.

The fiber for this piece was imported from Turkey. The metal work is all sterling silver, and all the glass work was hand made at Capell Art Studios. After completing this piece creative juices were flowing and the following poem was written to commemorate this piece of jewelry.

Lavender Sky Poem

Taste the air - of a lavender sky
Silhouetted birds - upon God's wings fly
Frosty diamonds - painted on leaves that fall
Indebted with gold - from chilly winter's call
Hallow globe - as night time quakes
Accolade this scene - as lavender sky wakes
